Definition: The diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders (infections and inflammatory) of the gums and bones around the teeth or their replacements.
Unlike most problems with your teeth, where you feel some pain or notice some other symptom before the problem progresses too far, gum disease often develops silently; with no warning signs.
Gum disease is often one of the most difficult dental problems to correct, yet it is one of the easiest to prevent. Regular brushing and flossing are the best ways to prevent gum disease. This prevents bacteria from collecting in periodontal pockets and attacking your gums. Regular visits to our office are also a great defense against gum disease because we can check your teeth and gums to diagnose possible problems before they become serious.
Unfortunately, some people are genetically predisposed to the periodontal disease and suffer from periodontal problems despite good oral hygiene.
It's important that you be aware of the "eight silent signs" that might be symptoms of periodontal disease:
- Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth.
- Red, swollen or tender gums.
- Gums that have pulled away from your teeth.
- Pus that appears between your teeth and gums when the gums are pressed.
- Teeth that are becoming loose or changing position.
- Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.
- Any change in the way your partial dentures fit.
- Chronic bad breath or bad taste.
If not caught quickly enough, periodontal disease can cause teeth to loosen or fall out.
The prevention and treatment of gum disease is an ongoing process for many patients. We will formulate a plan and recommend appropriate procedural maintenance visits for you that are intended to ensure you have a healthy periodontal condition. Call our office today (248-651-8787) if you have noticed any of these signs, or if it has been more than a year since your last dental check-up.
